How to play Word Deduction

Read the aim of Word Deduction, then make your first move. Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Use the example below to understand a decision. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Guess a five-letter answer from the included collection. Entries must contain five letters; accepted guesses are not checked against a complete dictionary.

Review a difficult moment

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Step by step

  1. Enter five letters.
  2. Green marks the correct position; gold marks an available copy elsewhere.
  3. Grey means no matching unused copy.
  4. Use the feedback to solve.

Controls

Type a guess and press Check guess or Enter. Use the control method described here for this activity. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

An answer containing one E can award only one positive E mark in a guess containing two. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

Repeated letters do not imply unlimited copies in the answer. Check the rule before repeating the action. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
