How to play Peg Solitaire

Open Peg Solitaire, check the instructions and begin a round. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Notice the feedback

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. A new-round button replaces the current round.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Keep the controls nearby.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
